Don't have a team but want to play? You can register as a free agent.

The Houston United Free Agent Program is designed for girls who want to compete in our league but aren't currently rostered on an established team. We'll work to place every free agent on a team before the season begins.

How It Works

1. Register as a Free Agent.

Sign up through our free agent registration form. There is no cost to register. Register here.

2. Attend the Free Agent Combine (Optional, but Recommended).

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Houston United will hold the Free Agent Combine at Community Fieldhouse in Spring, TX, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This is your chance to demonstrate your speed, route running, throwing, catching, and football IQ in front of Houston United coaches and league staff. The combine is required only for free agents who want to be considered in the team draft. If you don't attend the combine, you can still be placed on a free agent team. See the Combine Details section below for the full format and access information.

3. Get Drafted or Placed.

After the combine, there are two ways you can land on a team:

•        Team Draft: Established teams in the league may select combine participants they'd like to add to their roster.

•        Free Agent Team: If enough free agents remain in a given age division after the draft, and we can secure a coach, we'll form a new team made up entirely of free agent players. Free agents who chose not to attend the combine are eligible for free agent team placement.

4. Receive Offers and Choose.

If a team is interested in drafting you, you will receive an offer to join that team's roster. You may receive offers from multiple teams. The choice of which offer to accept — if any — is entirely yours. You can:

•        Accept any one of the offers you receive

•        Decline all of the offers and remain available for placement on the free agent team

Each offer will come with a defined window to respond. You may evaluate multiple offers concurrently and accept the one that best fits your daughter and family. There is no right of first refusal for any team; the decision is yours alone.

5. Free Agent Team as Backup.

Free agents who do not accept a draft offer remain in the free agent pool. If enough free agents remain in a given age division and we can secure a coach, those players are placed together on a free agent team. Declining draft offers does not eliminate the possibility of placement on the free agent team.

Note: A free agent team only forms when there are enough remaining free agents in a given age division and a qualified coach is available. Free agent team placement is not guaranteed. If you decline all draft offers and a free agent team does not form in your age division, you may not have a placement option for the season. Please weigh draft offers carefully.

Combine Details

Date: Saturday, July 25, 2026, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Location: Community Fieldhouse, Spring, TX (the same venue as Houston United league play)

The combine is a closed event. Only registered free agents and their parents, approved coaches of registered Houston United teams, and league staff may attend. This is to protect the integrity of the Houston United draft and prevent player recruitment from outside the league.

Detailed combine information — including what to bring, the schedule of activities, check-in procedures, and combine-day rules of conduct — will be emailed to registered free agents and approved Houston United coaches as we get closer to the combine date.

What It Costs

Registering as a free agent is free. You only pay the $150 player registration fee if you accept a team placement. Because no fee is paid up front, there are no refunds — if we are unable to place you on a team, you simply owe nothing.

Once a free agent accepts a team placement and pays the registration fee, the standard league refund policy applies. See our Refund Policy for details.

Registration fees are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions because participants receive league services in exchange. Houston United is a program of She Plays Flag Texas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 41-2859150).

Who Can Register

Any girl meeting our age cutoff (August 1) for the 9U, 10U, 12U, 14U, or High School divisions is eligible to register as a free agent.

Players ages 7 to 9 new to flag football are especially encouraged to register as free agents for the 9U developmental division. Our 9U division is designed to introduce girls to the sport and teach the fundamentals, and the free agent pathway is a great way for new players to get involved even if they don't already have a team.

Important Notes

•        Free agent placement is not guaranteed. We will only form a new free agent team if we have enough players in an age division and can secure a qualified coach.

•        Combine attendance is required only for draft eligibility. Free agents who do not attend the combine are still eligible for placement on a free agent team.

•        The combine is a closed event. Only approved coaches of registered Houston United teams, registered free agents and their parents, league staff, and invited guests may attend. See the Combine Details section above for full access rules.

•        Declining a draft offer carries some risk. If you decline a draft selection and a free agent team does not ultimately form in your age division, you may not have a placement option for the season. Please weigh draft offers carefully.

•        Once a free agent accepts a team placement, that player is fully protected by the Houston United No-Poaching and Roster Stability Policy. Coaches may not initiate recruitment of a placed free agent during the season, and mid-season transfers between Houston United teams are not permitted.

Free agents are subject to the league's Terms of Participation and Code of Conduct from the moment of registration. By registering, you agree to these terms.
